05/01/2011 Here I’m splitting one of our healthiest hives. I was kind of nervous because I’ve never done it before, but, I think I’ve read enough to sort of know what i’m doing… In a few weeks I’ll let you know if it was successful!

First, I checked if the hive had a lot of brood and bees, then, I found the Queen (good luck), it took me a good 20 minutes and 12 frames later, then I split the hive.

We mentioned in our website, that we let our bees swarm naturally… we do… but we also try to raise the strongest bees (winter adaptability and varroa mites resistance), for the future generation of bees.So when we have such a strong hive, we want to make sure we reproduce them. We let the bees raise naturally their own queen in the new nuc!!
